Medigap Policies are Health Insurance Plans sold by Private Insurance Companies to fill the "gap" in Original Medicare Plan coverage. Insurance companies can only sell a "Standardized" Medigap Plan. Medigap Plans must follow Federal and State Laws. These Medigap Plans must all have specific benefits to make it possible for comparisons. Your choices may be among 12 different standardized Medigap Policies (Medigap Plans A through L) and all are the same with any Insurance Company offering Plans. Each Insurance Company decides which Medigap policies to sell. The buyer pays a premium for the selected policy.
To purchase a Medigap Plan generally you must have a Medicare Part A and Part B. You will have to pay the monthly Medicare Part B premiums. Each spouse must purchase a separate policy. Medigap will not cover any health care costs for the spouse.
Medigap policies do not work with any other types of Health Insurance Plans other than Medicare including: Medicare Advantage Plans,VA Benefits, Employer/Union Coverage, and Tricare. (For information about Medicare Advantage Plans, click on Medicare Advantage)
